Música do Círculo and Vocal Improvisation

Música do Círculo explores the possibilities which arise when improvisation, singing, body percussion, movement, dialogue, play and human connection come together in a musical flow where everyone is invited to add their contribution. Presence and listening will be our guides during the collective cooperative musical journeys we'll share, building from the unique musicality we all bring as part of our essential nature.

The naturally rhythmic approach Música do Círculo brings to vocal improvisation will also invite us to explore our innate rhythmic fluency along with awareness on how rhythm manifests in our bodies, voices and circles, which can greatly impact and expand our improvisation possibilities. In these three (almost four) days we’ll sing and play with rhythm  from the micro level of subdivisions to the macro of musical structure, having body percussion and movement as partners to internalize and map rhythm in our voices and directly apply that to circlesinging and co-improv settings, always in the intuitive, light and engaging way Música do Círculo methodology cultivates.

Cara is a multidisciplinary artist, singer, performer and teacher from New York.   A long time student and collaborator in Rhiannon's Vocal River lineage, she will lead Rhiannon’s yearlong vocal improvisation program, All The Way In,(USA)  in 2026. Cara brings a wealth of knowledge and integrative tools for building skills both musically and intuitively for improvisation.

.For singers and teachers with the desire to study vocal improvisation, circle singing and song form.   Sing together to find  your unique and personal sound. Work alone, in pairs, and in ensemble- collaborate using the pleasure of physical movement while combining intuition and invention with skill and heart.  Using Rhiannon’s Vocal River exercises, singers deepen their improvisational vocabulary, study melody, harmony, rhythm and tone.   These exercises unfold in a carefully articulated progression. Working in circle, students first improvise melody, harmony, rhythm, counterpoint and interlocking parts in solo and small ensemble games. Then in learning to improvise as an ensemble, with exercises using the natural connection of body and voice, you learn to reveal a vulnerable, authentic sound.   Learning to improvise as an ensemble with shared responsibility and power teaches deep listening, generosity, courage and musical awareness.
